Annual Tar Heel Invitational Team Handball Tournament November 6-7, 2010

Carolina Team Handball will host the annual Tar Heel Invitational November 6th and in Fetzer Gym on the UNC Campus. Pool play begins Saturday November 6th at 9:30 am and continues all day. Playoffs and Medal Round play will start on Sunday November 7th at 8 am. All games are open to the public and admission is free. This year the Tar Heel Invitational features eight of the top teams in the nation including teams from Georgia, New York and North Carolina.

The University of North Carolina will field three teams in the tournament, including the Carolina and Tar Heel university teams and a strong alumni team. Carolina is a three-time USA Team Handball Collegiate National Championship team.

An Olympic sport, team handball is a fast paced high scoring sport that ranks second only to soccer in worldwide team sport popularity. Carolina Blue Cup Results

This weekend UNC Men's Club Team Handball hosted the 22nd Annual Carolina Blue Cup Team Handball Tournament. Due to inclement weather in the capitol area and a late withdraw the original field of eight teams was reduced to six with DC Diplomats and Quebec unable to attend. The tournament had to be reformatted as a result of the withdrawals. The six remaining teams: Carolina THC, Tar Heel THC, Carolina Blue, West Point Black, West Point Gold and ATH United played a round robin tournament with a final placement game based upon record and standing throughout round robin play. The round robin standings were as follows:
1. West Point Black (5-0-0)
2. Carolina THC (3-1-1)
3. ATH United (3-2-0)
4. Carolina Blue (2-3-0)
5. West Point Gold (1-3-1)
6. Tar Heel THC (0-5-0)
In the 5th place game West Point Gold defeated Tar Heel THC by a score of 26 to 15. The 3rd place game featured ATH United and Carolina Blue and would need an overtime to decide. Eventually Carolina Blue would win the match 17 to 18. The championship match would also need an overtime to decide a winner; however, West Point Black would eventually claim the gold medal with a 33 to 31 win over Carolina THC. This was the second game of the year between these two teams which had to be decided in overtime. The final standings are thusly:

Gold: West Point Black
Silver: Carolina THC
Bronze: Carolina Blue
4th: ATH United
5th: West Point Gold
6th: Tar Heel THC

CTHC Set to Host 2010 Blue Cup

Carolina Team Handball Club is excited to announce that we will be again hosting our annual Blue Cup tournament, on Valentine's weekend (February 13th and 14th). The tournament will showcase handball teams from across the country, and entry forms are due no later than February 6th. For more information or to receive a form to register your form, please contact CTHC coach Myles Bacon (myles_bacon9@yahoo.com).

Once the pools are set we will announce the schedule and draws.

Also, USATH has recently announced that College Nationals will be held in Myrtle Beach this year, the weekend of April 23rd to 25th.

West Point Invitational

Carolina Team Handball begun the new year by traveling to West Point to compete in the annual West Point invitational tournament. Seeded fourth in a pool consisting of Air Force, New York City Athletic Club, and Canadian Alberta Sr., CTHC began the day losing to Alberta Sr. by 18-20, but went on to defeat New York City Athletic Club 19-18 in a game that came down to the last play. After a brief break, CTHC rolled on, handily defeating a developing Air Force team 28-18.

With an elaborate seeding and tie-breaking system, CTH ended up the third ranked second seed coming out of pool play, and competed Sunday afternoon against West Point Black in the fifth-place playoff game. CTHC fell to West Point, and finished sixth in the tournament of twelve teams. New York Handball Club and Chicago played for the championship, which New York won in a replay of their pool-play matchup.

2009 Tar Heel Invitational Results

The first USATH officially sanctioned tournament of the year, the 2009 Tar Heel Invitational, took place October 16th and 17th. Eight teams competed in the tournament, playing a round robin against members of their pool on Saturday, and competing in the championship rounds on Sunday. Thank you to everyone who made this tournament possible, coaches, players, officials, fans--and we at Carolina Team Handball hope you enjoyed it your time here.
